These past couple of weeks i have been reading several books on Jesus and who he was and why he was here. Death By Love and Vintage Jesus are both written by Pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle. In these books he goes into great detail on Jesus’s death and what it accomplished. HE said that one of the things that Christians often do is over look the actual death of Christ. Death by crucifixion is a most painful death. The word excruciating literally means “from the cross”. Death on the cross is not death from loss of blood or beheading; no those are far more comfortable than what it actually is. Death on the cross is death by the inability to breath. They suffocate, naked, in the equivalent of the grocery store or a mall. This death was reserved for the worst of criminals. It was so bad roman citizens were not allowed to be crucified. I am however unable to describe such a death; the book does a much better job at it. I think that Death By Love does a very good job at it.
